When the Egyptians where alive, they believed that when the Pharaoh died, he became king of the dead, and the new Pharaoh became protector of the sun. They thought this to symbolize the risingand setting 
of the sun, if the process was corrupted, disaster would happen all over Egypt. To prevent this they did mummified their kings, bring them with all their belongings and everything they knew on Earth. The kings were not always buried in the pyramids, they sometimes were buried in piles with structures on top of them. Later when the Egyptians made the pyramids, and to what we think, they pointed towards a sacred stone called Benben. The people ho built the pyramids were not always the slaves, as most people think, they were also villagers overseen by the Pharaoh's workers. Some of the workers were permanent, others were just used for that time. Graffiti shows that the workers were very proud of their work.
