Early Christian and Byzantine portraiture represent both a continuation of and a break from the past. Byzantine art and Christian art were both influenced by Rome. Byzantine are was founded around the time of the fifth and sixth century, and their art reflects the differences between the Roman Catholic religion. There was not much sculpturing involved in either the Byzantine or Christian art. Also the portraits of the Fayum were paintings on wooden boards that were attached to mummies from Roman Egypt.
